Shorncliffe - Sharpe's Redoubt

The Redoubt, an earthen fort situated on the southern edge of the camp, began life as part of the Kentish anti-invasion defences against Napoleon's French forces. It became the headquarters of General Sir John Moore in 1802. It was there he developed the light infantry tactics and use of rifles that led to the formation of the Rifles Brigade, forerunner of today's Royal Greenjackets and the heroes of Bernard Cornwell's "Sharpe" novels. It is right on the coast: on a clear night the lights of Boulogne can be seen – a clear vantage point for seeing off encroaching forces.

Mick Aston said:
"There have been some intense periods of activity here. Defence Estates are good people to work with as there are usually questions that need to be asked about defence land. They employ archaeologists who can provide the answers. It’s good for people to see interesting sites of natural history and archaeology."

The team were searching for clues about the fort’s structure and past residence. Undaunted by the freezing conditions, they had just three days...
